The foothold for the historic Voet van Afrika Marathon in 2014 is on 18 October at Mega Park, Bredasdorp. The Voet, widely referred to as the toughest race with the warmest heart, is on its way to its 40th anniversary in 2016. However this year’s event has evolved into an exciting complete sport weekend for the Overberg and surrounds.

This challenging race with one of the most beautiful route settings is the southernmost marathon in Africa. The Voet was rated by Runner’s Guide as the third most popular marathon under single track and road race athletes in South Africa. The 42.2 km, 21.1km and 10km races all finish indoors at the 8000m2 BKB and Voermol exhibition Centre at Mega Park.

According Orton King, Group Executive Director of Agri Mega Group (AMG), the 2014 marathon will coincide with the High School Bredasdorp Top 10 Primary- and Secondary School Athletics, the new Voet van Afrika MTB Challenge for mountain bikers, a multi-sport expo – including diving, angling, tennis, golf, boxing, wrestling, kite surfing and many more-, a weekend-long youth sport program and an Oktoberfest for participants and fans.

The Toontjie, an annual charity fun run and walk at 18:00 on Friday afternoon, in aid of the struggle against cancer is presented in benefit of Pink Trees for Pauline. Walkers are welcome to enter their dogs as well into this all-pink event.

King confirmed AMG invited road runners; track and field school-athletes, mountain bikers (60km, 35km, 15km and a kiddies ride), high school mountain bike riders from participating Top 10 schools and young fans in almost every sport discipline to set the weekend aside for the Mega Sport Classic. This event, set to be the biggest sporting event yet in the Overberg is scheduled from 14:00 on Friday 17 to 15:00 on Sunday, 19 October in Bredasdorp.

The Voet van Afrika was established in 1978 when Abraham Hercules (Eps) Joubert, a mathematics teacher at the High School Bredasdorp had the idea of a marathon near the southernmost Tip of Africa after jogging with pupils. According to his widow, Anna Joubert Eps himself was never an athlete of note, but certainly was a huge sport lover.

Soon after his idea was panted the foundation has been laid for one of South Africa’s best known and most popular marathons. Eps himself was the main organizer of the Voet van Afrika from 1978 to 1981. The name of the marathon was given to the event by Eps on the recommendation of the town’s pharmacist Rupert Mizon.

Since the first race the participants get the marathon underway at daybreak at Mierkraal, farm of Ernst Conradie where the “Call of the fish eagle” and a shotgun-shot get them started.

Entries for the Voet and the Toontjie may be done at and well-known sport shops in the Cape Metropolitan and at Total Sports in Bredasdorp and will close on Monday,      October 6.

Experience the legacy and memory of the late Eps Joubert and be part of the unique indoor finish and sport showcase provided by the historic Voet van Afrika Marathon.
