EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT MEGA PETex 2015

Top show poultry this week only at PETex’s SA Championships

This week pet lovers can experience  South Africa’s most beautiful poultry show firsthand at the SA show poultry championships held for the first time at Mega Park, Bredasdorp. More than 3000 show poultry, of which some are quite becoming, a variety of cat and dog breeds, rabbits, fish, parrots, horse breeds, miniature horses and -cattle as well as farmyard animals will, aomgst others, be on show.

Show poultry breeders from all over South Africa will ensure that as of Wednesday, 1 until Saturday, 4 July their show birds impress the judges in the best way possible. In South Africa alone, more  than 100 breeds of show chickens are registered and almost as many pure-bred ducks, geese, turkeys and bantams.

According to Albert Lingenfelder, SASPO National chairperson,  show poultry owners are dedicated hobby enthusiasts who live their passion to the full. “This is evidenced by the nearly 3,300 entries received from poultry owners across the country for this week’s South African championships.”

The championship forms part of  the first Mega PETex home- and farm pet expo for all ages, that takes place  indoors and weatherproof  during the school holiday at Mega Park. The Western Cape Boerboel Show & Appraisal and the South African Show Poultry Organization (SASPO)’s  annual national championships and auction will be held during this pet extravaganza.

“Currently we have 15 show poultry  clubs across South Africa, and membership is open to everyone that is interested,  Albert informs passionately. “To be able to register a  pure bred show poultry  you must have shown successfully for three consecutive years. The assessment is based on the size, colour, shape ofthe head, body and legs to name a few criteria. Even through challenging circumstances, I assure you that we as show poultry breeders can affirm  SASPO’s motto, that we find: “joy in poultry.”

Janet Cook, South Africa’s only Silver Somali cat breeder and also showing some of her cats during Mega PetEx, confirms with Lingenfelder that a  high level of expertise is required for  pet breeding. Actively breeding for more than 18 years she has close to perfected the art and science. “Trends determine which cats to breed, but I have a particular love for Somalis and  have kept to the ‘pure ancient lines’that are very rare to find these days.

“Cats are admired for their companionship, love and loyalty, but are also healers of people that suffer from certain ailments and even stress,” said Yolanda Wessels, author of ‘Cats – A guide for responsible cat-owners in South Africa “, that will also be available at the expo.

“By sharing your home with a cat, you will receive unconditional love during family interaction, times of trauma  and after recovery from serious illness,” she says. Several cat breeds will be showcased from 10:00 to 14:00 only from Thursday tot Saturday to protect them from sgtressful conditions.
