The Mega Sport Classic (MSC) weekend from 17 to 19 October is a new event for the Cape Agulhas region but its heartbeat is the well-known and established Voet van Afrika Marathon.
According to the Agri Mega Group (AMG), organizers of the MSC an active weekend await sports men and women, the Western Cape youth and the whole community. The sport weekend at Mega Park, Bredasdorp is filled with running, jogging, walking, athletics and mountain bike challenges and development, with the 38th Voet van Afrika Marathon being the highlight. The race is known as the toughest race with the warmest heart.
For this family sport weekend, which also includes the first Mega SportX multisport expo and an Octoberfest with an oempa band, AMG joins forces with Bredasdorp High School for a major BHS Top 10 Athletics, with approximately 1 000 athletes from almost 40 high schools and a variety of primary schools.
For mountain bikers across the province, neighbouring towns and at participating schools, the very first Voet van Afrika MTB Challenge over 60km, 30km and 15km awaits on Sunday, 19 October.
The Voet van Afrika schools and other youth in the Western Cape are invited to like the MSC Youth Madness Facebook page and enter the weekend long youth sport program. , which includes coaching, tournaments and prizes. MSC Youth Madness will also present a father and son chip and putt, a X Games outdoor schedule with a skateboard park managed by the pro skateboarder, Chris van der Merwe and participation in almost every sport discipline.
The Voet van Afrika Marathon is currently ranked as the third most popular marathon in South Africa by Runner’s Guide readers. Athletes can look forward to 42.2km, 21.1km and 10km routes through some of the most beautiful and scenic routes in South Africa.
According to Esther Möller, project manager, SportX will open at 14:00 on Friday the 17th and lasts until Sunday the 19th at 15:00. The Bredasdorp High School Top 10 for primary schools starts at 12:00 on Friday at the school’s track and the pink Toontjie fun run will follow at 18:00.
Saturday morning at 06:00 the Voet van Afrika starts at Mierkraal and shortly after the 21.1km and the 10km will start at Mega Park. The Top 10 for high schools will start at 08:00 at Bredasdorp High School’s track.
All athletes, fun runners, cyclists and parents of school athletes are invited to the very first Mega Octoberfest from 18:30 Saturday evening at Mega Park. To prevent long lines, tickets can be purchased in advance at www.megasportclassic.co.za.
On Sunday morning from 07:30 mountain bikers will depart from Mega Park for the 60km, 30km and 15km.
Esther says the Pink Toontjie fun run and walk will be in aid of Pink Trees for Pauline, for all schools, the whole family, work teams, church teams, neighbours and sports clubs. A fun side of the Toontjie will be the Pink dog walk in aid of that Animal anti cruelty League.
